A rebel fighter Libya machine wrapped in heavy weapons ammunition before going into battle against the forces pro-Gaddafi, about 40 km down the road from downtown north Ras Lanuf [AFP]    UPDATE 3:14 EST    After a fierce battle Az Zawiyah am, reports are emerging of fresh air strikes in the port city of Ras Lanouf, who was captured last night by the rebels as they marched Libya to the west, to Tripoli.    just hours ago, the opposition rejected the attacks on security forces in Az Zawiyah Muammar Gaddafi, but the city reports indicate up to 1500 injuries with 30 confirmed deaths.   darbouka Colonel Hussein, leader of the rebellion, was among those killed by the flak.    According to reports from the Plaza of Martyrs, Quaddafi forces are at a distance of 4-5 out of town and rebel troops have retained control of nearby oil fields.    Az Zawiyah The battle is seen by those closest to military action today as a crucial attempt Libyan dictator to gain control later today in Sirte, his hometown, where earlier this week three soldiers were taken prisoner.    According to an eyewitness, the battle this morning was "genocide ... people are being slaughtered in a way that we have not seen. - Even in Iraq," AJ    reports, doctors say the hospital at the scene, people were being massacred in the streets of Az Zawiyah, executed before their eyes and ambulances were being attacked, and doctors at risk of death.    Here in Benghazi, SultanAlQassemi, a key source of reliable reports of the uprisings MENA reports that AJ can not display the "horrific images" as shot in the hospitals of the city after the bombing yesterday.     The OPEC Fund for International Development  (OFID) today announced $ 500,000 in emergency aid for people fleeing Libya.    The World Food Programme (WFP) has called for 38.7 million U.S. dollars for humanitarian assistance to 2.7 million people affected by the ongoing crisis.
